Space Traveler Reveals Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also featured leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
