The English and Welsh Placed Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
