The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
