In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
